IKEA hydroponics today means DIY, not a kit. IKEA’s KRYDDA/VÄXER indoor growing line, launched in 2016, isn’t listed on IKEA’s US website: when we searched ikea.com/us on October 8, 2026, “VÄXER” and “KRYDDA” returned zero products. What IKEA US does sell is ODLA clay pellets, glass propagation sets and mini greenhouses. Pair them with a separate grow light and a simple passive method like Kratky.

What Was IKEA’s Hydroponics System?

In May 2016, WIRED reported that IKEA had released the KRYDDA/VÄXER line of small-scale hydroponic kits. The system used stone wool plugs for germination, pumice in grow pots, a small watering setup, and an LED grow light on a frame. IKEA developed it with input from scientists at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and offered herb, lettuce, bok choy and chard seeds.
US availability was murky from the start. WIRED said the line was available in the UK and would reach the US the following year. Business Insider later corrected its coverage to say the line was available only in the UK with no plans for the US at that time. Either way, IKEA’s US website lists nothing from that line today. If you’re searching for IKEA hydroponics now, you’re looking at secondhand kits or DIY.
IKEA Hydroponics Products Available in the US Today
Our search of ikea.com/us on October 8, 2026 found a few items that work for hydroponics:
- ODLA growing media, clay pellets, 4.5 qt. Expanded clay suits net pots in Kratky, DWC or ebb and flow. Rinse before use. See our clay pebbles guide.
- VATTENKRASSE propagation set. Glass vessels for rooting cuttings in water. Good for herbs like mint and basil.
- ÅKERBÄR and ASPAREN greenhouses. Mini greenhouses for seedlings and humidity, not hydroponic systems.
- General storage and shelving. Opaque bins and metal or wood shelves are the base of most IKEA hydroponics hacks.
Product lineups change, so check current listings before you plan a build. We don’t have any relationship with IKEA, and we aren’t paid for mentioning these products.
3 IKEA Hydroponics Hacks That Work

1. Kratky tote for lettuce
- Choose an opaque storage bin with a lid. Light-blocking matters to prevent algae.
- Cut holes in the lid to fit 2- or 3-inch net pots.
- Fill with mixed nutrient solution so net pot bottoms just touch the liquid.
- Start seedlings in plugs, set them in net pots with clay pellets, and don’t top up fully; leave an air gap as roots grow.
Our Kratky method guide has nutrient and timing details.
2. Herb jars on a windowsill or shelf
Root basil, mint or oregano cuttings in glass, then move them to an opaque jar with net pots and clay pellets for longer-term growing. Clear glass grows algae if left too long in light, so cover or paint the jar once roots form.
3. Shelf-based grow station
A sturdy shelving unit holds trays or totes on each tier with LED fixtures hung underneath each shelf. This is the most popular IKEA hydroponics hack and doubles as a seed-starting station. See our seed starting shelf guide for spacing and wiring.
Buying a Used VÄXER Kit for IKEA Hydroponics
Secondhand VÄXER frames, trays and lights still show up on resale sites. If you find one, a few checks keep it useful and safe:
- Check the power rating. Read the input rating on the light’s power supply. A kit sold for the UK market may be built for different voltage and plugs than US outlets. Don’t use adapters on lighting that isn’t rated for US power.
- Inspect cords and connectors for cracks, corrosion or water damage.
- Replace consumables generically. Standard stone wool cubes replace the original plugs, and clay pellets or pumice work in the pots.
- Use any complete hydroponic nutrient. Original IKEA nutrient isn’t required; mix a general leafy-greens formula at label strength.
- Clean everything. Wash trays with soap, then sanitize before planting. Our cleaning guide explains how.
For most people, a new DIY build is simpler than hunting parts, which is why IKEA hydroponics content today is mostly about hacks.
Grow Lights for an IKEA Hydroponics Setup
Because IKEA US doesn’t list a dedicated grow light, you’ll need one from another seller. Choose a full-spectrum LED rated in µmol/s (PPF) with a published efficacy in µmol/J. Leafy greens need far less light than tomatoes. Our grow light guide and PPFD and DLI guide explain how much light to buy.
Safety Tips for DIY IKEA Hydroponics

- Keep water below electrics. Mount power strips above reservoirs and use drip loops on cords.
- Use GFCI protection. Plug water-adjacent equipment into GFCI-protected outlets. Read our electrical safety guide.
- Check shelf load ratings. Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon, so a 10-gallon tote weighs over 80 pounds.
- Use food-safe containers. See our safe plastics guide.
IKEA Hydroponics vs Ready-Made Kits

| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| DIY IKEA hydroponics | Low cost, flexible size, uses parts you may own | You source lights and nutrients; more trial and error |
| Countertop smart garden | Plug-and-play, built-in light and timer | Small capacity; proprietary pods on some models |
| Vertical tower or shelf kit | Higher capacity | Higher cost; pumps to maintain |
